ILYA Wrap up
I-20 ILYA Championship Regatta – August 7-9
by Keith Rosenbaum, Regatta Chair

The 2015 I-20 championship brought 11 boats to lake Mendota August 7-9.  Friday brought heavy wind conditions that approached class limits with multiple capsizes and recoveries. Three races were sailed, each won by Aaron Lynn from Oshkosh with longtime crew and Mendota local Keith Rosenbaum. Strong finishes were also by Steve Catlin from Oshkosh/Neenah (2nd, 3rd and 3rd) and Ben Herdrich, a former Wawasee, Indiana sailor (now hailing from Fond du Lac) who followed up a capsize in the first race with two 2nds in the second and third races.

Friday night entertainment was at the home of Lon and Donna Schoor, who provided excellent hospitality with food and drink enjoyed by all.

Saturday brought two races in the morning in medium wind, with lightening conditions in the second race. Each of these was won by the talented Ben Herdrich, chased by Aaron Lynn in second in both races. A lack of wind Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning meant only five races were completed of the scheduled 8 races.   On Saturday night we had a great regatta dinner at Nick’s on State Street.

Keeper trophies went to Steven Catlin with his father Geoff as crew on Friday and fiancé Christie George in 3rd with 20 points. Ben Herdrich with his cousin Dave Herdrich in 2nd with 18 points, and Aaron Lynn and Keith Rosenbaum winning the regatta with 7 points.

Thanks to all volunteers that helped to make the regatta a success. A big shout out to Lon and Donna Schoor for both hosting out of town sailors as well as the class party Friday night. Lon also lending his time and talent as the mark-set boat driver on Friday and Sunday.  Stefan Schmidt and Kristi Betts provided hosting for PRO Mark Tesar and his wife Deb. Also hosting were Hugh Schmidt and his wife Sonja as well as Keith and Heidi Rosenbaum. Thanks also to Larry O’Brian for delivering lunches on both Friday and Saturday. Special thanks to Jerry Simon who helped with launching at Burrows each day, with additional assistance by Paul and Dianne McMillian and David Sebald.
